He was driven mad by a cosmic entity and made to murder his father figure. His own attempt at creating a sovereign mutant nation failed. He's suffered as much as any X-Man in recent years. Cyclops is a terrific choice of main character in that sense.

Finally, we start to get a better sense of how the X-Men are dealing with the creation of a new mutant nation and the realization that the hard work has only just begun. There's been so much emphasis on changing the course of the mutant species that the individual characters are at risk of being swallowed up in all the spectacle. While in some ways the fast-paced, perpetually game-changing approach of House of X/Powers of X is missed, the fact is that the relaunch needed to transition to something more intimate and character-driven. Over the course of the story, characters like Storm, Magneto and Polaris also come into the forefront. This issue immediately establishes Cyclops as a focal point, directly (and no doubt intentionally) mirroring another iconic scene from Hickman's previous work. Instead, Hickman and artist Leinil Yu are more concerned with exploring how the X-Men are dealing with their sudden, dramatic shift in fortunes. The cliffhanger ending aside, this issue doesn't seek to introduce any radical new plot twists. The main difference between this series and its predecessors is that it's a slower and more character-driven look at the new mutant status quo. This issue does about as much as could be expected in terms of making itself clean and accessible, but there's just too much important setup in those 12 chapters of House of X and Powers of X to justify skipping ahead. It's important to point out that this really isn't the ideal jumping-on point for new readers. It features a large ensemble cast anchored around Cyclops and his extended family, and it continues the various major threads introduced in House of X and Powers of X. While it's still not entirely clear how each Dawn of X book will contribute to the larger picture, X-Men is pretty straightforward. Just don't expect this ongoing story to maintain the brisk pace its maintained up till now.

Now X-Men and the five other titles that comprise the Dawn of X line will begin the next chapter.

House of X and Powers of X defined the scope of the X-Men's new status quo. This issue isn't just the beginning of a new monthly series, it's the next major step in the grand machine that is writer Jonathan Hickman's X-Men revamp. It's been 28 years since the release of a comic titled "X-Men #1" has been cause for so much excitement.
